Pinewood Players Announce Recipients of the 2019 Scholarship Program
The Pinewood Players Scholarship Committee made their recommendations and the Board of Directors approved their choice of Maggie Hansen and Mattie Mitchell to be the recipients of the 2019 Pinewood Players Scholarship Award. The annual award of up to two scholarships of $2000 each is offered to deserving students who have close ties to Munds Park and who are pursuing a higher education in the performing arts or who may choose to focus on disciplines other than the arts but has attended at least two Pinewood Players Drama Camps. Congratulations to these outstanding young women!
Maggie is the daughter of Curt and Nicole Hansen. She graduated from Pinnacle High School in Phoenix with a 4.5 GPA. Her goal is to pursue a career in politics and law. Maggie will attend Northern Arizona University in the fall. Besides enjoying 4 years of ballet, tap and hip hop she has participated in four PWP drama camps and their productions including Wipe Out, Zombie Nights, Totally Awesome 80’s and Fiddler on the Roof.
Maggie is a member of the National Honor Society, the Spanish Honors Society and the Society of Women Scholars. In addition she has served as Secretary for the Statistics Club, played on the volley ball team for four years, volunteered with vacation bible school and enjoyed building homes in Puerto Penasco. Maggie says that participating in the performing arts through Pinewood Players drama camps has brought fun and joy to her life in addition to making friendships she believes will last for a lifetime. She said that the coaching she received through participating in the drama camps has encouraged her when times were hard and helped her to realize that she was capable of more than she imagined. She described summers in Munds Park as the best part of every year all because of the Pinewood Players drama camps.
Mattie, daughter of John and Jane Michell, graduated from Centennial High School in Peoria with a 3.8 GPA. She will be majoring in Aeronautical Science at Embry-Riddle University in Prescott, enrolled in the Professional Pilot track with the career goal of becoming a commercial airline pilot. Mattie has participated in 11 PWP drama camps beginning with 101 Dalmations. She has participated as a Kidz Kamp Counselor for 3 years and as Assistant Producer of Fiddler on the Roof last season. Mattie has volunteered at the Phoenix Zoo as both a Trail Teen and a Volunteer Keeper Assistant. She has worked at Panda Express and Red Lobster where she says she worked to insure customers had a positive experience and where she developed skills in problem solving and organization efficiency. Mattie is an Honor Roll student, recipient of a Phoenix Zoo award for her dedication and volunteer efforts and was voted Outstanding Camper by the National Resource Conservation Workshop for Arizona Youth Staff. She has competed in the Arizona Envirothon competition for 3 years, selected team leader in 2017 and won 1st Place in the Soils category in 2018. Mattie has participated in the Mars Student Imaging Project and attended the Dr. Tim Lautzenheiser Leadership Training Seminar. She also attended the Women in Aviation International Annual Meeting and gave a speech to the Society for Range Management. Mattie was President of the Science Club for two years, Captain of her softball team in 2016 and a member of the concert and marching bands for three years. Mattie said that involvement in the performing arts has greatly influenced her life. She told us she has found a passion for theater and music and also feels it has given her a second home and family. She calls her 11 year participation in PWP drama camps an amazing experience that helped her to fit in and understand where she belongs.
