Pinewood Players Unveils New Drama Camp Model for 2021
When we introduced Nancy Cummings as our new Drama Camp Administrator we told you she was creative, innovative, dynamic and vibrant. We predicted that she was going to usher in a new era for Pinewood Players Drama Camps. It didn’t take long for Nancy to take charge and propel us into the “New Pinewood Players Drama Camp 2021.”
First, she organized the “Premier in the Pines” theater open house event last fall. What a great way to introduce new families and campers to the Pinewood Playhouse and the new Drama Camp program! The event was also a reminder to current member families and others who have previously attended our camps of the unique ambiance and magical atmosphere they will experience in a real theater environment. The event drew over 100 guests during the 3 hour open house to safely tour the theater in small family groups and enjoy the entertaining activities provided by the Pinewood Players Drama Camp Steering Committee (DCSC) and many volunteers. It was a fun filled “end of season” event that
Pinewood Players was able to provide to thank our members and the community for their support, but t was also an exciting and successful “kickoff” event for Drama Camp 2021.
Nancy’s vision for the future of Pinewood Players Drama Camp is to bring fresh, new productions and creative talent to the program that youngsters of all ages will identify with and embrace. Her dream is for every child to have the experience of being a star and playing a unique and significant role, not just being a cast member in a nameless ensemble. Nancy immediately began defining a path that aligned with her vision for the new direction of the camp.
In collaboration with award winning children’s theater director Dale Nakagawa, she and her team went to work to revamp plans for Drama Camp 2021. Pinewood Players has worked with Dale on several occasions previously and his work with our camps has been incredible. We specifically sought him out to direct the classic “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” in 2020 to help celebrate the 30 th anniversary season of Pinewood Players. Unfortunately, the production was a victim of our Covid-19 2020 season cancellation. Understanding our change in philosophy and direction, Dale made some recommendations for a creative staff capable of bringing the new high energy attitude to the program
that Nancy and the DCSC wanted to achieve.
After interviewing the candidates, Nancy, Lu Cross (Assistant Administrator) and the DCSC announced their choice of three very talented young people with just the right attitude, motivation, charisma and
mix of youth and experience to bring the vision to life.
Micah Lawrence (Director), Rebecca Steiner (Choreographer) and Jennifer Adams (Music Director) all have strong ties to Dale and have all worked in the same creative circles in valley youth theaters. Their creative paths have crossed multiple times over the years and as a result we expect this team will have comradery and cohesiveness which will result in a special “magic” on the Pinewood Playhouse stage.
The first task that Nancy, Lu, and the new creative team tackled together was to identify a new production for the 20 th Anniversary celebration. While “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” is a classic musical, the team determined that they wanted a format that will allow more campers to play significant roles, one which specifically celebrates the 20 th Anniversary camp theme “Everyone is a Star.” They sought a production that would express the fresh new, contemporary style to which Nancy and the team aspire that would fully engage the young campers and yet would still celebrate the 20 years of history and the fun and comradery the camp has brought to so many previous generations of campers. After much research and deliberation the team decided that the only way to achieve the magic they desired for the 20 th anniversary production was to create an original “Revue”.
The original production, appropriately named “Cheers to 20 Years” will recreate songs and dance routines from previous camp production to celebrate our history and present them in a fresh, new way that fulfills the “Everyone is a Star” theme.
In a matter of weeks, Nancy and her team transformed Drama Camp 2021 into a new, exciting concept. Our dynamic young director, talented choreographer and accomplished Music Director are the perfect team to implement a fresh philosophy that espouses the “Everyone is a Star” theme. We can’t wait for them to get started with the Drama Camp 2021 activities! One thing that has not changed is Pinewood Players’ commitment to provide this incredible opportunity for the children of Munds Park to learn
about and participate in live theater. As in the past, the camp is open to the entire community and we welcome all children and grandchildren of our full time, seasonal, part-time and weekend residents.
If you have a child or grandchild between the ages of 7 to 18 years old that can devote 3 weeks next summer to a life enriching, fun-filled experience where they will make new friends while learning about and performing live theater on a real theater stage, mark your calendar and enroll them in Pinewood Players Drama Camp 2021 for an opportunity to create memories that will last a lifetime. The 2021 camp will begin on Monday, June 21 and will run weekdays through Friday, July 9. For the first two weeks the sessions will be from 1 to 4 pm. Performance week sessions (week 3) will start at 9 am and end 12:00 noon. Performances are scheduled for Friday, July 9 at 7 pm, Saturday, July 10 at 2:30 pm and 5 pm and Sunday, July 11 at 2:30 pm.
