Pinewood Players Events and Dates for our 30th Anniversary Season
The 2020 season of Theater in the Pines will mark the 30th Anniversary of Pinewood Players. A very special line up of events and productions are planned to commemorate the anniversary season. Here is an overview of the 30th Anniversary season plans.
The season will begin with a fun Mystery Theater event on June 5 at 7 pm and June 7 at 2:30 pm. This audience participation “whodunit” is written and produced by Linda and Scott Sustman. A prize will be awarded to the successful “sleuth” who solves the mystery and identifies the murderer. Test your detective skills and have some grins and giggles while you’re at it!
A free Ice Cream and Cake Social on the Pinewood Playhouse patio which will include theater tours and special free entertainment in the theater is planned for June 28 at 1:30 pm. The event is open to the entire community. This is Pinewood Players way of saying “Thank You” to all of our supporters and “Welcome” to those who are just learning about the group. Plan to be there to help us celebrate 30 years of continuous theater productions and other events promoting the performing arts in our community.
Our first full production of the 2020 season is on the calendar for June 12, 13, 19 & 20 at 7 pm and on June 14 & 21 at 2:30 pm. The delightful comedy “Dashing through the Snow” by Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope and Jamie Wooten will be performed bringing their zany holiday hilarity to the Pinewood Playhouse stage. The play is set four days before Christmas in the tiny town of Tinsel, Texas where the harried yet upbeat innkeeper of the Snowflake Inn B & B encounters a colorful parade of eccentric and “nuttier than a fruitcake” guests who give her all she can handle! The play is performed in four acts, each its own vignette and each directed by a different director. Terry Brown, Betsy Froderman, Pam Solace and Elyse Webber combine their directorial talents to bring us a unique “Christmas in June” event that will tickle your funny bone and keep you smiling until next December.
Pinewood Players traditional Drama Camp for the youngsters will begin on June 22 and run through July 12 with performances on July 10 at 7 pm and July 11 & 12 at 2:30 pm. The camp is open to all children in the community ages 7 through 18. This is the 19th consecutive year for Pinewood Players Youth Drama Camp and our Drama Camp Steering Committee has chosen a very special production to celebrate the occasion. Drama Camp 2020 will perform the Andrew Lloyd Webber, Tim Rice production “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.” They have also brought back award winning children’s theater director and choreographer, Dale Nakagawa to direct the play. Career music professional Sandra Dyke will work side by side with Dale as Music Director. The storyline follows the classic biblical tale of Joseph and his coat of many colors set to the spellbinding music of Andrew Lloyd Webber. The Narrator guides the audience through the musical journey that follows Joseph from innocent young dreamer to slave, prisoner, dream interpreter and finally to Egyptian nobleman who saves the country from famine and becomes right hand man to the Pharaoh, whose character is more than vaguely reminiscent of another popular “king” (of rock & roll…thank ya, thank ya vera much). In the end, Joseph tests the honesty of his brothers, teaches them a valuable lesson, forgives them for their wrongdoing and the entire family is happily reunited at last in a grand finale. The music is classic Andrew Lloyd Webber, the lyrics by Tim Rice are both amusing and haunting, the choreography is lively, the costumes are stunning and the sets are spectacular. You will not want to miss this event performed by the youth of our community. As the title states, it’s going to be “Amazing!”
July will also host our traditional and ever popular Reader’s Theater “Cabaret” event on July 22 & 23, both performances at 7 pm. You’ll want to be there to see your friends and neighbors as they perform fun and entertaining comedy skits for your enjoyment. Many of our Reader’s Theater performers have gone on to act on the Pinewood Playhouse main stage! Join us for a night of entertainment, laughter and libations.
August will bring a very special 30th Anniversary production to the Pinewood Playhouse stage. The first ever “Pinewood Follies“ is a multi-act review of entertaining song, dance and comedy routines. It will be produced by Linda and Scott Sustman. Linda and Scott have been involved in the production of “The Walden Follies,” a similar type production which has been performed annually in Texas for a number of years. They will bring their expertise in producing such events to the Pinewood Playhouse stage to celebrate our special season. The show will feature something for everyone and will lighten your heart and get your hands clapping and your feet stomping! You may be surprised by the hidden talent in our community. Come see them perform! “The Pinewood Follies” will be performed on August 7 & 8 at 7 pm and August 9 at 2:30 pm. Only three performances so get your tickets early.
General Membership Meetings are scheduled for June 20 and August 22, both meetings will begin at 10 am in the Pinewood Country Club. And of course, a very special season ending “It’s a Wrap Party” celebration is being planned to close out the season-long festivities. The party will be on August 27, will begin at 5 pm and is open to all Pinewood Players members. The special theme will remain a surprise until later in the season, but you can count on good food and drink and lively entertainment as we celebrate the end of this special season. Watch for additional information regarding how to reserve your seat at the party later in the season.
Additional announcements will be forthcoming throughout the season, but mark your calendars and plan to participate in all the fun and excitement surrounding the season long Pinewood Players 30th Anniversary celebration. Watch for announcements in The Pinewood News, on our web site at www.pinewoodplayers.com, in special emails to our members and in Pinewood Country Club emails.
